Happy New Year to you all

I hope that you had a fun and restful over the recent festivities.

This week Anne has been very busy creating 10 new arrangements of the beautiful classic Amazing Grace. We now have 30 arrangements on music-scores.com.

This Christian hymn was published in 1779. However, the words were written seven years prior to this by the English poet and Anglican Clergyman John Newton (1725-1807).

Despite his post as an Anglican Clergyman and his mother wanting him to become one Newton was not guided directly into religion, His mother died of TB when he was young and he didn’t get on with his stepmother and spent an unhappy time at boarding school. Newton went into the navy after leaving school and then became involved in the Atlantic Slave trade in 1748. During a particularly dangerous and violent storm on the seas Newton called on God for mercy and this marked his conversion (he obviously didn’t commit whole heartedly as he continued in the slave trade for around seven further years!). He became ordained by the Church of England in 1764 (aged 39) and this is when he began to write hymns. The words to Amazing Grace are based on his personal experiences.
