Girolamo Frescobaldi was born in 1583 in Ferrara, Italy. He was a master of the organ, both in composition and as an organist.

We have Dopo il Credo for brass quartet featured on our main site.

Many considered him a genius! His father was in property and most possibly an organist gave Girolamo and his half-brother’s aptitude for the organ.

Career

In 1607 Girolamo began his career in Rome as church organist at Santa Maria in Trastevere. He then ventured on his one trip out of Rome, travelling to the Netherlands, and then publishing a book of madrigals in Antwerp. In 1608 he was elected as the organist at St Peter’s Basilica, remaining there for twenty years. Frescobaldi returned to the post again in 1634 until his death in 1643.

He published eight collections during his lifetime, others remain in manuscripts or published after his death. His work influenced the likes of Bach, Purcell, Froberger, and many others.
