Bononcini Sheet Music
Giovanni Bononcini (Buononcini) was a Baroque composer, cellist, singer, and teacher. Born on 18th July 1670 in Moderna, Italy, the oldest of three sons.
We have two arrangements of his aria Per la Gloria d’Adoravi – from Griselda for download.
His father was a violinist and composer and his younger brother also became a composer. Bononcini studied with his father until he became an orphan at the young age of eight. He then went to music school in Bologna. At the age of fifteen, he published three collections of instrumental works and a year later he received an acceptance for the esteemed school of Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna. He also served as the maestro di capella of San Giovanni in Monte until 1691.
Travel and Compositions
Bononcini left Bologna and went to Rome to work for a power patron of the arts. Whilst there he produced many works including the successful opera Xerse and he mixed within prestigious musical circles.
On leaving Rome he travelled to Vienna and worked for the Emporer. During this time he chose to live with his brother.
In 1720 the Royal Academy of Music invited Bononcini to London where he received backing from noblemen. Bononcini rivalled Handel who was backed by the King. Unfortunately, Bononcini lost against Handel in a competition which resulted in the loss of his backers.
Despite this, he produced three successful operas Astarto, Crispo and Griseld. However, as a result of proven plagiarism charges, he had to leave London.
In his later years whilst in Paris Bononcini was cheated out of most of his property. Sadly he died in Vienna on 9th July 1747 almost penniless and largely forgotten.
