Life and Career

His father died when he was only three and Brosig and his mother moved to Breslau where he spent the rest of his life.

After a brief time at teacher training college Brosig decided to become a professional church musician. Between 1835 and 1838 he studied the organ, then in 1838, he took on the role of organist at St Adalbert’s in the centre of Breslau. After the early death of Franz Wolf in 1840 Moritz took charge of music (Kapellmeister) and became chief organist at Wroclaw Cathedral. He never performed concerts outside the Cathedral but was very popular.

Adolf Friedrich Hesse was an organ virtuoso at the same time as Brosig and very much overshadowed him. This was widely due to his agreeability to appear in European performances.

In addition to his duties at the Cathedral, Brosig became a professor of theory and organ at the University of Breslau in 1871. Later years saw him suffer from mobility issues which eventually prevented him from climbing up into the organ loft. He died on 24th Jan 1887.
