Johann Christoph Pezel (born 5th Dec 1639) was a German composer, violinist and trumpeter.

On music-scores.com we have a small selection of Pezel sheet music for 2 trumpets and 2 trombones including Sonata No. 10.

Pezel also identified himself using a variety of other names including Petzold, Petzel, Petzoldt, Bezel, Bezeld, Bezelius, and Pecelius. The latter caused some confusion with Czech musician Johannes Pecelius.

Career

Pezel became a member of the town band in Leipzig in 1660 after the city fathers decided to increase the number of members from seven to eight. Ten years later he received a promotion to Stadtpfeifer (city piper).

His most productive years were between 1669 and 1686 publishing mostly instrumental music for cornet or trombone ensembles, typical Ratsmusik (town band) music. His compositions over this period included Musica vespertina lipsica (1669), Musicalische Seelenerquickungen (1675), Deliciae musicales, oder Lustmusik (1678), Musica curiosa lipsiaca (1686). In addition to this, he produced sacred vocal music and theoretical.

In 1672, Pezel went into an Augustinian monastery in Prague. However, this was short-lived, leaving to become a Protestant and returning to his music.

He died on 13 October 1694 at the age of fifty-five in Bautzen.

Johann Altenburg is another German trumpeter featured on our site.
