Chanson de Matin was written for popular demand, and has a lovely, fresh melody which became very well known. This version is of equal importance to all parts and is for 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba.

Chanson de Nuit was written to get Elgar out of financial difficulties. It is in fact a very beautiful and passionate piece which he later orchestrated, due to its popularity. This version is of equal importance to all parts and is for 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba.

Entry of the Gladiators has been called Grand Chromatic March, and Thunder and Blazes in 1901 in an arrangement by Laurendeau for windband. This arrangement became popular as a Screamer march, which is circus music to introduce clowns and stir up the crowd. It is also played for rousing concert performances, as in Last Night of the Proms. This version is for Mixed ensemble of Trumpet, Euphonium and Piano.

Lieto Godea, arranged for 2 Trumpets, 2 Trombones and Organ.

O Magnum Mysterium, arranged for 2 Trumpets, 2 Trombones and Organ.

Arietta, the first of a cycle of Lyric Pieces. This was one of Grieg s favourite melodies. He also used it as a waltz in a piece called Remembrance which is the final piece of the cycle. For quartet of 3 Trumpets and Tuba.

This waltz has a lovely major:minor folksongy feel to the first theme with a contrasting answer in the major key, which is all repeated. For the middle section we have a gentle melody in the major key, again repeated. The original melody returns, and the piece finishes on a thoughtful reference to the gentle middle section. Quartet for 2 Trumpets, Trombone and Tuba.

Watchmans Song, or Chant du gardien, written after a performance of Macbeth. A night watchman would ring the bell at midnight at the door of a prisoner condemned to death, to call him to his hanging. For 2 Trumpets, Trombone and Tuba.

Elfin Dance, Fairy Dance. The secret of success for this little dance is to play very quiet, short staccato notes, not always easy to do. Contrast this with a few crescendos, returning immediately to quiet, and you will conjure up a picture of magical elfins darting around in the air. For 3 Trumpets, French Horn and Tuba.

Popular Melody, or Folk Melody, illustrates in the style of the piece that Grieg had a great interest in folk music, and was also an admirer of Chopin. For Quartet of 2 Trumpets, Trombone and Tuba.

Norwegian Melody is reminiscent of Christmas, with tumbling bells accompanying a tiny touch of the Messiah, and then the sleigh quickly makes its way in the middle section before returning to the tumbling bells. Quartet for 2 Trumpets, Trombone and Tuba.
