Grieg: Op.12, No.1: Arietta: String Quartet

instrumentArietta, the first of a cycle of Lyric Pieces. This was one of Grieg s favourite melodies. He also used it as a waltz in a piece called Remembrance which is the final piece of the cycle. For 2 Violins, Viola and Cello.

Grieg: Op.12, No.2: Waltz: String Quartet

instrumentThis waltz has a lovely major:minor folksongy feel to the first theme with a contrasting answer in the major key, which is all repeated. For the middle section we have a gentle melody in the major key, again repeated. The original melody returns, and the piece finishes on a thoughtful reference to the gentle middle section. Quartet for 2 Violins, Viola and Cello.

Grieg: Op.12, No.3: Watchmans Song: String Quartet

instrumentWatchmans Song, or Chant du gardien, written after a performance of Macbeth. A night watchman would ring the bell at midnight at the door of a prisoner condemned to death, to call him to his hanging. For 2 Violins, Viola and Cello.

Grieg: Op.12, No.4: Fairy Dance: String Quartet

instrumentElfin Dance, Fairy Dance. This little dance alternates Pizzicato with bowing in quick succession, not always easy to do. Contrast a few bowed crescendos, returning immediately to pizzicato, and you will conjure up a picture of magical elfins darting around in the air. Quartet for 2 Violins, Viola and Cello.

instrumentNorwegian Melody is reminiscent of Christmas, with tumbling bells accompanying a tiny touch of the Messiah, and then the sleigh quickly makes its way in the middle section before returning to the tumbling bells. Quartet for 2 Violins, Viola and Cello.
