I challenge you to listen to the music as you read!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"nv-iframe-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u266c Jacques Offenbach \u266fCan Can (Orpheus in the Underworld\/Orph\u00e9e aux Enfers)\u266f\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jUY-3KjWPdc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In all seriousness Orpheus in the Underworld (<em>Orph\u00e9e aux enfers<\/em>) was Offenbach&#8217;s first full length Operetta which was performed in 1858 &#8211; his previous works were regarded as&nbsp;much&nbsp;less adventurous. However, this one was very well received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offenbach was a German born French composer, cellist and impresario.&nbsp; He was born on 20 June 1819 in Cologne.&nbsp; Despite being accepted at music college at the age of 14 he found that academics were not for him and he left to earn his living as a cellist and composer.&nbsp; His ambition however was to compose comic pieces for the musical theatre.&nbsp; He was a known as&nbsp; a funny man, like those he wrote about, however he was also subject to bouts of depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 1860&#8217;s he produced over 18 full length operettas&#8217; including La belle H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, La Vie parisienne, La Grande-Duchessse de G\u00e9rolstein and La P\u00e9richole. The provocative humour, sardonic jibes together with Offenbach&#8217;s melody made these internationally famous and translated versions were&nbsp; successful around Europe in particularly in Vienna and London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His works from this period included&nbsp;<i><a title=\"La belle H\u00e9l\u00e8ne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_belle_H%C3%A9l%C3%A8ne\">La belle H\u00e9l\u00e8ne<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;(1864),&nbsp;<i><a title=\"La Vie parisienne (operetta)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Vie_parisienne_(operetta)\">La Vie parisienne<\/a><\/i>(1866),&nbsp;<i><a title=\"La Grande-Duchesse de G\u00e9rolstein\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Grande-Duchesse_de_G%C3%A9rolstein\">La Grande-Duchesse de G\u00e9rolstein<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;(1867) and&nbsp;<i><a title=\"La P\u00e9richole\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_P%C3%A9richole\">La P\u00e9richole<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;(1868). The risqu\u00e9 humour (often about sexual intrigue) and mostly gentle satiric barbs in these pieces, together with Offenbach&#8217;s facility for melody, made them internationally known, and translated versions were successful in Vienna, London and elsewhere in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offenbach fell in love with H\u00e9rminie d&#8217;Alcain before he could marry her he needed to be financially secure and achieved this by touring around France, Germany and onto London returning with a new found reputation and wealth.&nbsp; His next obstacle was to change his religion and he become a Roman Catholic.&nbsp; He married at the age of 25 and their marriage was happy and life long, they had 5 children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He blossomed under Napolean III regime with his humour and satiric barbs and became know as the his &#8216;The Mocking Bird of the Second Empire&#8217;&#8230;but as this Empire fell in 1870 to the Prussians, France was swept by violently anti-German sentiments, and Offenbach&#8217;s music fell out of favour with French audiences.&nbsp; Fortunately his successes in London and Vienna continued.&nbsp; He was also accused of being a German Spy due to his German upbringing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offenbach suffered from Gout during the 1860&#8217;s and died in 1880 at the age of 61 of heart failure brought on by acute gout.&nbsp; He&nbsp; continued working until his death.
