T\u00e0rrega Sheet Music and Biography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Francisco T\u00e0rrega was a Spanish composer and classical guitarist often referred to as the ‘the father of classical guitar’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e0rrega wrote almost eighty original pieces for the guitar and over one hundred arrangements, mainly from piano compositions from the likes of Chopin,<\/a> Beethoven,<\/a> and Mendelssohn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two of T\u00e0rrega’s most famous compositions are Danza mora and Recuerdos de la Alhambra<\/mark><\/a>. We have over 30 arrangements of T\u00e0rrega’s sheet music<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family & Early Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

His father was a watchman at the Convent of San Pascual<\/a>, but also played the guitar including the flamenco. Francisco was said to sneakily borrow his father’s guitar whilst he was away and try to recreate his father’s playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following an accident that injured his eyes T\u00e0rrega’s father moved the family to Castell\u00f3n de la Plana with the knowledge that even as a blind musician his son could earn a living. His first music teachers were both blind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1862 whilst on tour, guitarist Julian Arcas<\/a> heard a ten-year-old Francisco T\u00e0rrega play and asked his father if his son could return to Barcelona and study with him. His father only agreed on the terms that his son also learned the piano. Unfortunately due to Arca’s tour schedule their time together was very brief and T\u00e0rrega ran away trying to earn a living playing in coffee houses. However, he was caught and returned to his father. Following this, he ran away twice to Valencia playing with the gypsies. It wasn’t until the 1880s, in Alicante that T\u00e1rrega was finally able to formally study with Arcas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1874 he joined the Madrid Conservatory<\/a> with the backing of a wealthy sponsor. He studied composition deciding to concentrate solely on the guitar. By around 1876 he was teaching and performing regular concerts and went on to tour Spain and compose his own material. To further expand his repertoire he began transcribing – most of which were piano works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was fortunate to meet Conxa Martinez a wealthy widow who became a patron allowing him and his wife the use of her house in Barcelona. On a trip to Granada with her, T\u00e0rrega was inspired to write Recuerdos de la Alhambra<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between the late 1880s and early 1900s, T\u00e0rrega limited his tours to Spain. However, on a visit to Algiers in 1900 he heard the repetitive sound of an Algerian drum which inspired him to write Danza mora the following morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marriage, Family & Later<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1882 T\u00e0rrega married Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Rizo, sadly their first baby didn’t live very long and they made the decision to settle permanently in Barcelona. They went on to have three more children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enrique Granados <\/a>and Isaac Alb\u00e9niz<\/a> were among his friends in Barcelona. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later years<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the age of fifty-three T\u00e0rrega encountered paralysis on his right side, it didn’t stop him from performing, however, he never fully recovered. He died in Barcelona at the age of fifty-seven on 15 December 1909.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
