It is also sung on other occasions of saying goodbye &#8230; such as funerals and graduations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Unbeknown too many Burns &#8216;collected&#8217; rather than &#8216;composed&#8217; some of the lyrics for this song&#8230;. Many of the words are very similar to a ballad written by James Watson  in 1711. He didn&#8217;t do badly from collecting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rough translation of the first line &#8216;For Auld Lang Syne&#8217; &#8211; &#8216;For the Sake of Old Times&#8217;.
