O’Holy Night

Hello Music-Scorers

starry sky

You may have a particular favourite Christmas carol, Christmas song, or a selection. Away in a Manger always springs to my mind, but you might prefer a bit of Bing Crosby, Shakin’ Steven’s, or Mariah Carey!

I decided to google the top ten Christmas Carols and the first google entry showed O’Holy Night as number one, (which bizarrely also appears on Mariah Carey’s 4th Christmas Album).

On music-scores.com we have over sixty arrangements of this beautiful carol ranging from a simple piano version to multiple ensembles. The skill rating required is generally 5/9, however, there are a few easier and harder options depending on the instrument and technicalities.

O’Holy Night History

Also known as Cantique de Noël, O’Holy Night is based on a French poem by Placide Cappeau and was put to music by Adolphe Adam in 1847. The English version was translated to English in 1855 by John Sullivan Dwight.

It is all thanks to the Parish priest in Roquemaure who requested the local poet Placide Cappeau to write a Christmas poem on the renovation of the church organ. So may we all thank this wonderful priest for his request and of course Mr Cappeau and Mr Adam.

It is often played as the introduction to midnight mass in French-speaking churches.

O’Holy Night words

English

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth;
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
‘Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;

Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices!
O night divine! O night when Christ was born.
O night, O holy night, O night divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming;
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand:
So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land,
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our friend;

He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger!
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King! your King! before him bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is Love and His gospel is Peace;
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother,
And in his name all oppression shall cease,
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful Chorus raise we;
Let all within us praise his Holy name!

Christ is the Lord, then ever! ever praise we!
His pow’r and glory, evermore proclaim!
His pow’r and glory, evermore proclaim!

Peuple debout! Chante ta délivrance,
Noël, Noël, chantons le Rédempteur,
Noël, Noël, chantons le Rédempteur!
