This comic opera tell the story of Frederic, a young man in his 21st year. He is released from his apprenticeship to a band of Pirates and is obligated to them until his 21st birthday. However Frederic realises that having been born on 29th February his actual 21st birthday is not for another 63 years. His sense of duty bounds him to the pirates. Fortunately he meets Mabel the Major- General Stanley’s daughter who faithfully agrees to wait for him.
It was an instant success when it opened in New York on 31 December 1879 and ran for 3 months. It debuted in London on 3 April 1880 where it hosted 363 performances.
It is still a very popular opera today.
